Overview
Tunis - Tunisia
On 8-9 March 2016, the  Ministry of Public Function, Governance and Anti-Corruption  in the Republic of Tunisia is organizing an expert meeting in Tunis on “Asset Declaration, Conflicts of Interest and Illicit Enrichment”, with the support of the “United Nations Development Programme” UNDP and in cooperation with the “Arab Anti-Corruption and Integrity Network” ACINET.

The event is a continuation of the support UNDP has been providing to Tunisia since 2013-2014 to strengthen its anti-corruption legislative framework in accordance with the UN Convention against Corruption UNCAC and national needs. These efforts enabled the development of three bills over the course of a two-year drafting process on asset declaration;  illicit enrichment; and  the protection of whistleblowers of corruption in the public sector; following which the bills were submitted to extensive consultations within the Government and with representatives from civil society. Recommendations that emerged from these consultations were integrated in the three bills, and the aim is to continue to improve the bills in light of recent recommendations.

More specifically, the experts meeting aims at supporting the intergovernmental steering committee established in 2014 and in charge of strengthening the anti-corruption legislative framework to merge two bills on illicit enrichment and asset declaration and conduct the needed harmonization accordingly; while also integrating provisions related to conflicts of interest, in accordance with the national context and in light of international standards and namely the UN Convention against Corruption UNCAC. The meeting will also enable participants to share their points of view and deepen their knowledge of good practices and lessons learned from related comparative experiences from the region and the world.

Participants to the meeting include the members of the intergovernmental steering committee, as well as other relevant Tunisian stakeholders and namely parliamentarians. The meeting will also be drawing on specialized expertise from within UNDP and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime UNODC as well as ACINET.
