10:30 – 11:00 Session I: Basic principles of data-driven storytelling
Too often, data produced by the NSOs are not presented in a user-friendly manner, thus contributing to sustaining a general perception that data are not produced and an indifference to the efforts made by NSOs to increase their production of official statistics. Data dissemination and presentation are as important as data production, and bridging the gaps between data producers and data consumers should be perceived as a priority.
The SDGs aim to “leave no one behind”, and it is important for NSOs to play an active role in catering to the needs of citizens and consumers of data, such that the latter can take part in public debates around SDGs. Hence, the importance of advancing dissemination mechanisms and presentation efforts to make data more attractive visually. The production of data-driven and statistical stories is an effective way for NSOs to reach the general public as is shown by international best practices.
This session will introduce the participants to the basic principles of storytelling with data within the SDGs framework. It will demonstrate how NSOs can create a narrative structure for data.

11:00 –11:45 Session II.1: Hands-on training on dynamic reporting using excel
The session will introduce participants to key formulas and functionalities offered by excel that help filtering and creating dynamic charts and proceed to the actual implementation by participants.

12:15 –13:00 Session II.2: Working Groups
Participants will work on datasets that include real data from the NSOs’ databases.
13:00 – 14:00 Session III.1: Principles of designing infographics
The visual presentation of data is becoming the language that statisticians and designers are using to communicate data with the general public, and the increasing availability of free online tools facilitates the creation of visuals and graphics.
Infographic is an important tool that the NSOs can use to produce readable and digestible graphics that are visually appealing to users.
This session will introduce participants to free online visualization tools and will guide them through the process of preparing statistical content to build an infographic on SDGs related topics such as health, labor and employment and education, etc…

15:00 –17:00 Session III.2: Working Groups and Presentations
Participants will be guided to implement knowledge acquired in Session III.1. They will then present the infographics they developed and talk about the process the working group went through the presented infographic. They are expected to focus on challenges and gaps in skills and to discuss the infographics produced by various groups.

As users are counting more on having easier access to information, it becomes necessary to develop effective ways for visualizing statistics. Interactive maps is another important tool to visualize and understand data.
In this session, participants will be introduced to the importance of geo-data and will discover free online visualization tools that use interactive maps.

12:00 – 13:30 Session V: Hands-on training to build timelines using free online tools
This session will explore the basic techniques of building visually rich and interactive timelines. The participants will be introduced to free timelines tools that help create attractive stories.

14:30 – 15:30 Session VI. Best practices in data visualizations
In this session, participants will be introduced to pioneering examples of data visualization projects. They will have the chance to compare these examples to their work at the NSOs and discuss their relevance to the NSOs’ needs.

15:30 – 16:00 Session VII: Closing Session: Feedback, Recommendations and Next Steps
In the closing session, participants are expected to share feedback in assessment of the training workshop and to discuss expectations and needs whether at the individual or institutional levels. The participants will also offer the ADP suggestions for specific topics and training workshops that they wish to attend.
