The Arab Development Portal Regional Project is organising a focus group meeting with 20 journalists from the Arab region to discuss the challenges they face in taking full advantage of the power of data and will identify their needs in terms of capacity building and the enabling technical and legislative infrastructure that would empower them to play a more active role in making sense of the flow of statistics.
With enhanced open data facilities and increased provision of statistics in the Arab region, journalists have a new source of “interesting stories” that can contribute to unravelling societal controversies and holding governments accountable.
This is a role that is fully grasped in US and European media outlets and a few Latin American countries. However, only recently did journalists in the Arab region pay attention to the power of data.
